Motherhood And Leadership – Is it inter related?

Motherhood is regarded as one of the toughest jobs in the world. As a mother, you are  responsible for the well-being of your child and to play a major role in your child’s journey towards adulthood. We normally associate skills such as empathy, patience, problem solving and
good communication with motherhood.

Being a mother can prepare you for leadership in many ways.

Empathy:

Empathy and motherhood go hand in hand. Mothers are known for the ability to empathise with their children and to understand their feelings without making any judgements This same skill can be used in a corporate when you are responsible to lead a team of individuals. When you are able to put yourself in your team’s shoes, you will be able to understand the psychology of the employees and make better decisions which will facilitate better employee morale and improve your leadership skills.

Patience:

Mothers are the most patient people in the world! Mothers have a unique ability to stay calm even in the most difficult situations. Mothers can do anything, from getting bare minimum hours of sleep during the night, to juggling hundred different activities during the day, all this while staying patient. When you put this trait in a leadership role, patience is very important as it helps you to deal with stressful situations without losing your temper.

Problem-Solving:

As a mother, you are constantly finding solutions to multiple problems on a daily basis. From dealing with a child’s tantrum to wriggling through a tough conversation with a teacher, mothers are problem solving experts!

These skills are needed in a leadership position, where you will have to face tough situations and come with up an instant solution.

Communication:

Mothers often have a clear line of communication! They know exactly where and how they need to communicate depending upon the circumstances. Mothers are experts in communicating with compassion, empathy and clarity. In a leadership role, clear communication is very important to make sure that all the team members are aligned towards achieving the set goals and objectives.

Conclusion:

Being a Mother is a difficult job, but it can also be an excellent training ground for under appreciated leadership skills. Empathy, problem solving and communication skills are required for success in leadership roles. As a mother you should you find and polish these talents as they will lead to a highly successful leadership career.
